Frequently asked questions

Gun Buying Questions
Are guns registered in the State of Florida?

Florida is a state that is known for its strong support of gun rights, and in particular its lack of any gun registration laws. Unlike many other states, Florida does not require gun owners to register their weapons or keep any lists or records of private firearms. Furthermore, Florida also bans the private keeping or possession of firearm registries, ensuring that citizens can own and use firearms without worrying about undue government surveillance. This pro-gun stance has made Florida a popular destination for those looking to protect their Second Amendment rights, and has made Florida a leader in upholding the constitutional right to bear arms.

Can a non resident of Florida buy a gun?

It is common knowledge that in order to purchase a handgun in Florida, you must be a resident of the state. However, this does not apply to long guns, which can be purchased by individuals who are residents of other states so long as the sale complies with applicable laws in their state of residence. Additionally, if you are a part-time resident of Florida, you may also purchase a handgun or long gun, provided that you meet all other legal requirements for firearm ownership.

Do I need a permit to purchase a gun?

Florida does not require a permit to purchase a firearm.

Is there a waiting period to purchase a firearm?

When purchasing a firearm in Sarasota County, there is a waiting period of three days, excluding weekends and state holidays. While some counties may extend this waiting period to up to five days, the waiting period in Sarasota County is relatively short compared to other jurisdictions in the state. However, individuals who hold a Florida Concealed Weapons License are exempt from this waiting period and may purchase firearms at their convenience.

Is there a limit to the number of guns I can purchase?

No.

What would make me not eligible to purchase or possess a firearm?
  1. Convicted of a felony (or equivalent)
  2. Fugitive from justice
  3. Unlawful user or addicted to a controlled substance
  4. Adjudicated mentally defective or involuntarily committed to treatment
  5. Illegal alien
  6. Dishonorable discharge from the US Armed Forces
  7. Renounced United States citizenship
  8. Active protection order (restraining order, injunction for protection, etc.)
  9. Convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence
  10. Under indictment or information for a felony

In addition to federal law, Florida law prohibits persons who:

  • Are adjudicated delinquent of a crime that would have been a felony if committed by an adult until the age of 24 or until record is expunged.
  • Receive “Adjudication Withheld” on any felony or on a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence and three years has not yet lapsed since the completion of sentencing provisions.
  • were recently arrested for a potentially disqualifying crime which has not been dismissed or disposed of in court.
Can I buy a gun when I have a medical marijuana card or use medical marijuana?

Federal law classifies marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act. As such, it is illegal for anyone who is an "unlawful user of medical marijuana" to possess or receive firearms or ammunition, and it is also illegal for anyone to sell firearms or ammunition to someone whom they know to be an unlawful user of medical marijuana.

"Any person who uses or is addicted to marijuana, regardless of whether his or her State has passed legislation authorizing marijuana use for medicinal purposes, is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance, and is prohibited by Federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition..."

How old do you have to be to buy a gun?

In the State of Florida you need to be 21 to purchase any type of firearm.

How much does a gun cost?

You can buy a decent gun for around $300 and go up from there. Budgeting for around $550-$600 will increase you options.

How long does a gun background check take?

Background checks can take 30 seconds to multiple days, but most only take a few minutes. Always allow enough time when purchasing a firearm for delays.

What are the best ways to transport my firearm in car after I buy it?

We recommend keeping your new gun packaged in the box and stored safely inside the vehicle out of sight. If you have purchased an item from our store, keep it in the big red bag.

Firearms Training
What should I look for in a good firearms training course?

When selecting a firearms training course, it's important to consider the instructor's qualifications. Are they certified by a respected agency or organization? Do they have experience as a law enforcement officer (They have enforced the laws they are teaching you and had to carry 24/7)? It also helps to make sure that the course will meet your specific needs, such as if you're seeking a concealed weapons license or just looking to learn basic firearms safety. Additionally, it's crucial that the course covers relevant gun laws in your State. After all, understanding firearms legislation is just as important as knowing how to handle a gun properly. With careful consideration of these factors, you can ensure that you receive quality firearms training and education.

What are the different types of shooting positions?

Why get hung up on positions? You might be sitting in a car, laying bed, behind your desk at work or walking through the mall. The point is that you need to train for every possibility! You cannot just WILL yourself into getting ready because you can be in different positions that could require different shooting techniques - which also means train!

Firearms Maintenance
How often should I clean my gun?

Every time you use it. Your gun should be cleaned as often and in the same manner that you wash your dishes. Not only are you cleaning your gun but you are looking for any broken, missing or defective parts. If you are not frequently firing the gun but carrying it everyday we suggest wiping the gun down with a gun rag at least once a week. If the gun is sitting there in storage wipe it down every other month.
